Biography
2018

Mary Hrbacek was born in Alexandria, Virginia, near Washington, D.C.  Her connection with art began in pre-school at age five, when she learned to paint at an easel on large formats. When Hrbacek was ten her family moved to Stockholm, Sweden, to a culture that reveres nature and loves the outdoors, in a connection that later spurred her to paint and draw her signature human-like trees.  She became immersed in the Swedish culture, but at age 15 her family relocated back to the States where she entered high school; in art class she received recognition for her sculptures. The family moved within Virginia the next year, but this time she was too foreign to fit the Northern Virginia kids, so she was not accepted. She became an outsider. Her family moved once again, this time to Seoul, South Korea while she stayed in place to study at a liberal arts college; she had to endure the loneliness caused by this move, but as time on one’s own is essential to an artist this test eventually sparked her desire to study art and become a practicing artist. After college she had to make a living so Hrbacek earned a certificate to teach handicapped children, a field introduced to her by her mother. With the students she created a series of wall-sized mural paintings on paper, a practice which inspired her to take up the study of painting seriously.

Hrbacek finally had the opportunity to come to NYC to attend a school that stresses studio art and visual perception, life drawing (not offered in N. Virginia) and the structure of the picture format, but she received no technical painting training.  It took her many years to gain the skills she needs to evolve and express her personal vision. The crucial “outsider” experience in high school enabled her to survive a similar episode she had while studying at a select private school in Greenwich Village, NYC.  In art school Hrbacek was new to the sophisticated language used to converse about contemporary art but she soon learned to master it, and she ultimately became an international art critic, a member of Aica (The International Art Critics Association).

One day as she walked in Riverside Park, NYC her view of the trees changed; she noticed the parallels between human anatomy and the structure and limbs of the trees she so often saw and drew.  Since that time, Hrbacek has traveled widely, discovering human-like old growth trees from around the world, especially in Italy and China, to explore in her art. Her personal vision is highly abstract, recognizable but not representational.  She has originated a poetic sense of transformation that symbolically elicits the gestures and relationships found among people, which she instills in her acrylic paintings.  She translates the tree structures from digital photographs that delve into the social aspects to be found in the placements of trees that she has recently read about in “The Hidden Life Of Trees,” a New York Times bestselling book.  In her drawings the artist probes tree contours and anthropomorphic shapes with charcoal, which is a material made of tree bark; thus her tree drawings are made of trees.

She has shown in the US and internationally; her works are included in many public and private collections. Hrbacek lives in NYC with her husband, a mathematician and rock climber from Prague.  The artist has a studio in Harlem, and in her summer home in Northern Vermont.
